Nerikomi and Coloured Stains Japanese Hand Building Techniques

Workshop Image

Nerikomi Techniques

Nerikomi is a decorative technique in pottery where patterned clay made from mixing and layering different colored or shaded clays is used to form pottery through shaping and firing.

Slab building techniques can be used for Nerikomi pottery and involves stacking coloured clay and slicing through the cross section to reveal a pattern, which can then be used as an applied decoration. You will be amazed at the stunning hand built pieces achieved with these beautiful techniques. Create swirls and patterns to enhance your 3 pieces you will hand build using molds.

Nerikomi is a labor-intensive process that requires patience and effort. To achieve the desired colors and patterns, the clay must be carefully mixed, and the surface must be sanded with sandpaper to reveal the pattern clearly, resulting in a highly detailed and intricate piece.

This workshop will take your hand building to another level to inspire you on your journey into ceramics.

You will create a platter and 2 small bowls to call your very own. This will take 2 weeks to dry, then it will be fired and glazed for you.

Bisque firing and glazing is included in this workshop
